The right tools are always required to do the job right. This goes for plumbing as well as any job you are doing requiring tools. While a professional plumber will be buying the top of the line tools for their work, the do it yourself type person can make do with the tools that can be bought at their local home improvement center without too many issues.
Whichever way you decide to go, the right tools will make sure that you get the job done in the easiest possible way and without the stress.
One of the things you will have to understand about plumbing and tools is that the fittings that you will be working with will need to have a more specialized set of tools than any other job you may undertake. Most of the time you are going to be working with pipe fittings that will require you to use a pipe wrench (also called a monkey wrench, because even a monkey can use one).
These are adjustable wrenches that can open up big enough to loosen or tighten a pipe fitting. Most common wrenches are not big enough to be used on a pipe fitting, so keep things like this in mind when you go out to buy your tools.
You will also need an assortment of screwdrivers as well. Phillips head and regular head screwdrivers are a must as some faucets and appliances you will be working on have screws in them. You should also pick up a good socket set that has both metric and standard sockets in it. You never know when you might have to remove a cover from an appliance to get to the pipe that needs to be fixed.
Don’t forget to pick up a pipe vise and threading set. These will come in handy if you have to cut and rethread a piece of pipe to make it fit perfectly.
There is a lot more on your tool list that you can pick up. Things like plumbers dope (thread seal tape) and pipe glue will come in handy as well. Although these aren’t necessarily considered tools, most plumbers will use these for every install that they work on.
While picking out what tools you are going to need for a specific job may be daunting, you can count on the internet to give you all the information you might need to help you fix whatever plumbing issues you might have.
