Reverse Osmosis water systems have been around for years, and they offer some reasonable ways to purify water. However, the newer units are not as effective as their older counterparts. This is rather surprising since most new technology is better than the old.
Once upon a time, people living in rural areas had one source of water. This was usually a lake, river, or stream. Those people needed reverse osmosis water units to do a large part of water purification. However, the newer systems are made to use in homes that receive public water. These were basically developed because of a recommendation by the Environmental Protection Agency for people at risk.
All public sources can catch parasitic cysts. These are microscopic egg type forms of life and they are quite strong. It is not possible to remove them from water through the regular methods like chlorination, oxygenation, or UV radiation. The only way they can be removed is at your home faucets using submicron filtration methods.
It has been found that these cysts can be removed through the submicron membranes of reverse osmosis systems and systems using multi-media blocks of carbon and a sub-micron channel structure. The difference between these two methods is that the carbon system is a lot cheaper and protects you more.
The reverse osmosis units of the past did not take out the chemicals like chlorine and other items hazardous to your health because they were smaller and weighed less than the molecules of the water. Some of the newer units added granulated carbon to take out some of the chemicals.
However, people in the rural areas cannot use these because there is no ability to take out any larger contaminants that may be there. This system would get clogged quickly and the membranes damaged. The older systems had a lot wrong with them. This included waste water that was made and the energy needed. However, they were more effective in moving towards water that was cleaner and safer.
Newer reverse osmosis water systems are too expensive for most homeowners. On top of that, they might actually make more health issues for people at risk because they take out the good minerals without being able to catch the THMs. These are caused by chlorination and are in nearly all homes in America. THMs raise the chance by 30 percent of contracting bladder and colorectal cancer. Canadian research estimates show about 700 new cases annually that come directly from exposure to THM.
THMs can only be taken out with the adsorption process. The multi-media block systems are very effective at removing them. Reverse osmosis systems, however, do not do the job. The THMs are trapped through the multi-media block. Reverse osmosis water units, on the other hand, are not that advanced. What you get is water that is de-mineralized, tastes stale, and still has dangerous chemicals, including THMs.
